Parque do Caracol begins new history in Canela under private management

The attraction was reopened to the public after undergoing the first interventions of the new management

Parque do Caracol, in Canela (RS), began a new history last Saturday (17). The Novo Caracol e Tainhas Consortium, which won the 30-year concession to operate the attractions, presented the improvements made in the first stage of its administration and reopened the park to the public.

Closed since December 5, in this first stage called "quick wins", the park received changes to infrastructure and signage, revitalization of operations, parking service, improvement of amenities such as toilets, cleaning of trails, restoration of spaces and living areas. More than 170 people worked on the project over the 12 days.

"Parque do Caracol is an emblematic site that has projected the Hortênsias Region as a tourist destination in Brazil. We are arriving in Rio Grande do Sul with the management expertise of the Pão de Açúcar Cable Car Park, one of the most visited tourist attractions in Brazil and the world. Just as it changed the tourism scene in the country 110 years ago, we're here to make history and expand Canela's projection to the world," said Sandro Fernandes, CEO of the Novo Caracol and Tainhas Consortium.

In addition to the structural changes, including the main access, at this first stage the park relocated the tenants already operating in the space to new structures, installed new signage and special Christmas scenery. In the case of the artisans, the consortium has also hired a company specializing in souvenirs to help market their products.

"It's a very special moment for the state government and also for the country because we are seeing the environment and the possibilities differently. We are starting with the concession in one of the best and best prepared places for tourism, which is the Serra Gaúcha. The nature tourism parks, the conservation units that allow access for environmental tourism, were set up so that the community could see nature up close, feel it and enjoy it, and we understood that the way it was set up wasn't full, it wasn't satisfactory and in some situations it wasn't even safe for the community to access. So the concession of these small parts within a series of environmental and land use regulations is the best way to offer the service to the community," said State Secretary for the Environment and Infrastructure Marjorie Kauffmann.

The concession for Parque do Caracol and Parque do Tainhas had a grant value of R$150 million and an overall contract value of R$464 million until the end of the 30-year period.

Tainhas Park will have first investments in 2023
Tainhas Park is already under the administration of the Novo Caracol and Tainhas Consortium. Investments will begin in 2023 and new attractions should be implemented from 2024.

"It's important to note that Parque do Caracol in Canela is an attraction already in operation with significant traffic. In the case of Tainhas Park, we're going to develop a master plan together with the granting authority that respects the characteristics of the environment and contributes to the development of the region," says Sandro.

The Tainhas Park concession area is 1.5% of the total 6,654.70 hectares and includes the municipalities of Jaquirana, São Francisco de Paula and Cambará do Sul.
